This book deserves all the hype 😍😍😍

But seriously, it’s a beautiful story. Adunni is an instantly likable and admirable character, and her growth over the course of the novel is captivating and unforgettable. I couldn’t put it down!

Adunni is only partially educated and speaks broken English, and the book is written in her voice, which some people might find off-putting but I promise you should stick with it. The way it’s written really adds to the story, I thought.

The pacing was good too. I never really knew where it was going or what would happen next, but it kept me interested the whole time.

There’s also a lot of great side characters. I particularly loved Adunni’s relationships with Khadija, Kofi, and Tia.

Read if you like: literary fiction, education, inspiring books.

Wow, I absolutely loved this book! Adunni has jumped to the top of my list of favorite characters. She is so strong and independent and just an all around amazing character. I really related to Adunni's need to speak her mind, ask questions, and question authority and could really see why it was so hard for her to keep her opinions to herself even when it got her in trouble. She loves fiercely but it always trying to improve herself, her situation in life, and has a giving heart and really wants to improve her community and country.

The book is written mainly through Adunni's point of view and is written in her Nigerian dialect. This threw me at the beginning of the book and it took me a little bit to get used to the writing style. Once I got used to it though the writing and dialogue really flowed and gave the book its own unique voice.

This book was incredibly beautiful, honest, raw, heartbreaking, and uplifting. It was often difficult to read about the life situations that Adunni found herself in (married to a man 3 times her age at 15, having to run away from her village, being sold into household slavery, beatings, emotion abuse, sexual abuse) but the perseverance and strength that she showed throughout was so inspiring. The relationships that she made with Kofi and Tia in the second half of the book were also really lovely and I enjoyed seeing Adunni have positive adults in her life who were supporting her.

This book and story is one that I think will stick with me for a long time. I read this from the library but will definitely need to get my own copy because this is a book I know I'll want to read again and again.

It's hard to believe that The Girl with the Louding Voice is Abi Dare's debut novel. Dare creates a deeply emotional and heart wrenching tale in the story of Adunni, a 14 year old girl who dreams of receiving a formal education. When her mother passes away and her father sells her off to a much older man, Adunni escapes to the city only to find herself in another powerless situation. Despite the injustices brought against her and the hardship she endures, Adunni finds a way to use her voice to fight for what she believes in.

What makes Adunni such a strong character is her resilience, positivity, and heart. From the very first pages, it is easy to root for Adunni even in her broken English. Despite everything, Adunni spends her free time developing her understanding of the English language so that her voice can finally be heard. It's heart-warming to see after so much tragedy, that there were still plenty of people willing to help this child find a way out of her hardships. Adunni works hard to improve her life, and is always grateful for those who help her. While Adunni is naïve and trusting by nature, she is also hard-working and determined to create a better life for herself. Her optimism never wavers: Adunni will get an education at whatever cost is required.

For it's moments of heart, this story is also horrifying. Adunni endures human trafficking, rape from an older man, domestic violence, and slavery. The story is told in the first person in Broken English, so that all of Adunni's thoughts are clearly laid out to the reader. Those who are sensitive to these subject matters should be warned that some depictions in the novel are graphic and troubling. This story is also empowering, hopeful, and undeniably a feminist piece of literature.  Written by a Nigerian woman who tells the story of a Nigerian girl enduring the worst human rights issues in her country, Dare is able to discuss the challenges women face in making decisions about their futures.
