I had trouble connecting to the narrator. The way the characters behaved didn’t always make sense to me. The chapters were short and it made it easy to read.

I wanted to like this book more, I really did. Parts of it did resonate with me as a Gen Xer who was around the same age as June and Greta in 1986; the AIDS crises, latch-key kids, slightly negligent parenting (not mine but I definitely saw it with some friends). Ultimately, though, I felt that AIDS and the deaths of two gay men (bury your gays anyone?) were merely props to propel the story of two sisters learning to grow up and apart. I thought the book was well-written otherwise, I just didn’t appreciate the author co-opting a national tragedy in this manner.

This gives me vibes of “To Kill a Mockingbird” in the sense we get a young girl, her sibling and devotion to a family member. It’s deeply moving and paints a picture of a topic people don’t often want to discuss.

description

The writing in this was really beautiful and sad, and there were parts that I really loved. But I didn’t think the whole love thing was really necessary. I didn’t think it really added to the book, other than making the MC feel guilty. I think that could have even cut out and only the ending would have really been affected. I still liked it, but that aspect of it kept pulling me out of the story. It was to ooky for me.
