Being a poor woman in Victorian times is now the worst thing I can imagine
What an emotional roller coaster!!! Poor Tess just could not catch a break all because she was constantly forced to deal with the repercussions of other people's actions. I guess the ending was satisfying (for me), because she finally took matters into her own hands and was in no way afraid of those consequences.
Probably more like 3.5 I enjoyed Tess’s story but she was very frustrating as a character as was Angel
A book that was certainly not what I expected. I wanted to broaden my genres and this was definitely a great book for that. It felt familiar enough that I was able to relate but kept me on my toes right until the last chapter. This is a great read to expand your vocabulary and try to understand that life isn’t all that different nowadays compared to the time this was written. A good read and definitely one I’ll have to come back to, just to make sure I understood it all.
I read this book ten years ago when it was assigned to be my senior research project in english class and it still holds its status as the worst book I've ever read. Poor character development leads to characters who make very drastic actions and decisions with no base to them. I was incredibly confused and depressed while reading this book. I don't mind a sad story but I do mind when the sadness makes no sense or doesn't seem to derive from any place where a foundation for it has been laid. I hated every character in this in book, including Tess herself, but the worst part of all was the ending...which I won't spoil here. I love a lot of classics but I'd say skip this one!

Loved how Tess was a feminist even when all the odds were stacked against her, she did what she could to live the life she wanted amidst the circumstances.
