I hated it. It may have been the most depressing thing I've ever read. It was really good, but I say 0/10 do not recommend. Run away now before u get sucked in because it will not go well for you. I kept holding out thinking it was going to get less depressing but it did NOT.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a book I did not expect. It reads like other books from late 19th century. However, it has contemporary plot twists.

Tess is one of the most relatable characters in English literature. For the most part, all the characters are dynamic and so are the situations.

I was not put on this world to watch a grown man pine over his own fictional woman. If I have to read another word about Tess's lips or innocence or cows then I will invent a time machine just to prevent Thomas Hardy's conception, with no regard for the butterfly effect. The safety of my sanity would merit any negative side effects.

3.5 not as good as i thought it would be.. Hardy and Bronte are bleak writers... I think I've discovered why i like Austen so much more

3.5 I liked it more than I thought I would

Absolutely devastating

"Hardys novel introduced his most memorable tragic heroine, Tess, an impoverished young woman who must fend for herself in a world where she is only valued for her uses to others." (From Amazon)

I read this novel in grade 12 English and will read it again.
