I picked this up on a whim... Not my sort of genre or author or anything really. Clark is a good writer, and he obviously gave a lot of thought to procedure and detail. I spent most of the book wondering if there were something more than what I was reading, and... There was. A lot. I really enjoyed the read as a change of pace.

Legal thrillers aren’t my usual fare, but I when I noticed this highly rated novel pop up in my library’s audiobook collection I decided to give it a try. I’m really glad I branched out because this is a well written story that kept me engaged right to the end.

Andy Hughes, a public defender in small town Virginia, has spent close to two decades defending small-time crooks and the local drunk and disorderly type. Andy’s a likeable fellow who believes in the law and feels an ethical obligation to defend his clients to the best of his ability. But after so many years of this grind Andy’s ready to resign, agreeing to take on just one last case.

Damian Bullins is known local criminal, he’s got a long record, a drug habit, and no remorse for his actions. Bullins is accused of murdering the wife of a wealthy local leader and even confessed to the crime. Due to an error during the arrest Bullins confession is thrown out and Andy, knowing his client is guilty, must defend him.

This novel offers insight into law and human nature. Andy has to navigate what to do when the institution he believes in fails, he has to explore this both professionally and personally, and as an ethical person, find his path to resolution.

I enjoyed this novel and the next time I’m in the mood for a smart legal thriller I’ll pick up a book by Martin Clark.

Creative

A public defender is defending a guy whom he knows is guilty but pulls one rabbit after the other out of a hat to save him. Lots of surprises, fun read. Makes you frustrated w/ how the legal system operates.

Respectfully, a waste of time…. absolutely written by a man (derogatory)
Characters were flat, and I kept telling myself to read through the end because it’s a crime thriller and there had to be a massive twist coming to make up for the amount of one-dimensional build-up. I was hoping it would all come together perfectly at the end and I would be left breathless.
I was breathing fine in the end because it was so poorly written, scattered, and disappointingly plain.

A southern fried legal drama.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it a thriller, because it’s pretty much a literary version of a legal TV show.

And some of the story revolves around simple legal procedures like motions to suppress and developing defense strategy.

But I found the book really entertaining, if not straightforward.

The story also focuses on the main character, Andy Hughes’, personal life. It’s refreshing to have mature adult characters navigating mature relationships in a mature way.

Based on the Audible experience and the writing, I would consider picking up another Martin Clark novel.
