It’s good. Well written. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do have to say that the movie is better. The book however is really good and I was invested all the way. Chuck is my fav character, he’s so sweet and nice and I love his lil jokes. The ending was really nice after all of that

I'm pretty impressed by how good this book was, even though I've seen the movie and knew the ending.
It kept me interested from beginning to end, the pacing was actually perfect and surprised me a few times when it jumped unexpectedly. I got attached to the characters really quickly, the atmosphere was amazing. I loved the mystery and the clues. Knowing the ending, I could pay attention to the clues we get, and I think it's done brilliantly, giving you all you need but not making it too obvious.
This would actually have been a 5 star, but the use of some slurs, especially the n-word, put me off a lot.

I’m reading this book many years after watching (and loving) the movie multiple times. I couldn’t believe how close the book and movie were, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie that follows a book scene for scene (sometimes word for word) as Shutter Island does! The book is a fantastic crime thriller, the puzzles and decoding by Teddy in the book are even better since the book is taking its time with them. My only hiccup is the final lines of the book vs the movie, in which I favor the movie. Honestly this would have been a 5 star read if I hadn’t already seen the movie and heard that last line, but I have and can’t take it back! Either way, whether you’ve seen the movie or not, if you like crime/psychological thrillers, I guarantee you will like this one.

Read following several viewings of the film adaptation. Even though I already knew the plot and the final twist, I still couldn’t put the novel down.
The added details and depth really enhanced the protagonist’s background and the extent of his delusions.

i understand why parts of this book had to be cut out so that the film wasn't a porno with a plot, good book though!

It's summer 1954. U.S Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule come to Shutter Island for an investigation. Rachel Solando, a patient in Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane has disappeared, despite being locked in a cell under constant surveillance. How did she escape the island without being seen? In her room, they discover a code that give them important clues. Nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems, what shocking truths will be revealed?
Teddy is determined to succeed in this investigation but it's not the only thing in his mind. He recently lost his wife and doesn't seem to break free from his past.

Before reading this book, I had already watched the movie adaptation several times. which is brilliant btw. So this story wasn't new to me. But let me tell you, it's one of my favorites. Not because it's a happy, light read. It's actually the opposite. But it's such a well crafted story, it's such a masterpiece and it makes me feel so much. It has the biggest twists ever. It contains so much detail, literally everything, every word has a meaning, a special reason for being written, which will only make total sense at the very end. It's like a puzzle that is slowly coming together. Some parts won't make much sense to the reader until the last pages. Just be patient please, it's so worth it. Please don't read any spoilers online!! The tone, the atmosphere is so distinctive. You won't want to stop reading.
Be aware that there are a lot of trigger warnings, some parts may be hard to go through. It's one of the saddest stories I have ever read and it holds such a special place in my heart. I constantly think about it. I feel so much for these characters.

I could write a whole essay on this book, it's one of my all time faves. Just read it, it will be like nothing you have ever experienced. Let me know if there's any other Dennis Lehane book you recommend, I want to read more from this amazing author.

(if you know the story, you'll understand why i decided to use water for this picture)
