I loved this book. I had a gnawing discomfort with the fact that a white person had to be the agent of change, but...I don’t know, after considering it I think that it would have been a completely different and much more difficult book if that hadn’t been the case. Skeeter was on “the inside” and that was the point, sort of a mole... and the author effectively erases her presence as the novel comes to a close, with her moving away. I love a novel that feels really “finished” at the end, instead of just like the author runs out of steam, and I felt very satisfied at the end of this novel. Beautifully written. I will say that I did not buy Skeeter’s relationship with Stuart. I don’t buy that a woman so interested in Civil Rights never thought to ask how he felt about the subject.

This was a novel that made me cry, laugh and angry all within a few pages! Such an inspirational novel. At first I was unsure about the story however the further I got into the book the less I could put it down. A classic in the making for sure!

This was a tough one to rate.
On one hand, I loved the story, the plot, and the characters. I thought it was very well written.
On the other hand, something about the tone didn't sit right with me. I felt like this tried to lessen the seriousness of some really tough subjects. Without looking up the author, it was very apparent that it was written by a white person. I felt like there was more focus on how Skeeter felt as a white woman fraternizing with the African American community than what it was like to be a member of that community dealing with constant racism, oppression, and social injustice.

I don't think I would of been able to get through this book if it wasn't for the audiobook. I found myself wanting it to hurry up and end. Some of the characters annoyed the heck out of me while others I fell in love with. I didn't hate this book but I did dislike a lot of stuff in the story. I'm really torn on how to rate this one.
