Vol. 1 ★★★★★
Vol. 2 ★★★★☆
Vol. 3 ★★★★☆
After a terrifying battle with Lust and Envy in the old philosopher's stone laboratory, Ed's automail arm is once again out of commission. Winry comes to Central to fix Ed's arm while he recuperates from his injuries, and who should also come to visit the hospital but Fuhrer-President King (omg, why so many titles...) Bradley! Turns out, he's there to tell them all to keep quiet about what they're investigating, and to not trust anyone within the military as corruption seems to be brewing. Colonel Mustang also comes to Central, where he is expecting a promotion, and it turns out that Scar was saved from sure death by a community of fellow Ishvalan refugees. We say goodbye to a beloved character (), who is killed () directly after discovering some mysterious crucial piece of information before he can pass it on to anyone. Al is harboring some existential doubts and anxieties, and he and Ed end up having quite the emotion-laden argument and reconciliation. Finally, the Elric brothers decided to head South to find their old alchemy teacher, and Winry tags along so that she can experience the wonders of Rush Valley, a town on the cutting edge of automail engineering.
Things are heating up! The scene with Al's accusation was pretty melodramatic, and I find it hard to believe that Al would really buy into the Butcher's mind tricks that much. But overall, the pace is clipping along nicely, the characters are distinct, and the mystery is intriguing.

Still a delightful story with great character, world building and plot intrigue. Emotions run high in this volume, and it’s all handled expertly.
