I am kicking myself for not picking this book up years ago. This was a great companion to The Shining.

I really enjoyed Doctor Sleep but not quite as much as The Shining which I gave 5 stars to. Doctor Sleep follows Danny from the Shining 30 years or so later. A little girl with the shine gets in touch with him and in true King style scary things ensue. I'm not sure it deserves 4 stars on its own. If I had not loved The Shining it may have been a 3 star book for me, but I read them back-to-back to its impossible to rate otherwise. Overall a great King book, but not quite as great as its predecessor.

Firstly, it's not The Shining. In a lot of ways it reveals the difference between early "horror" king and modern king. This isn't necessarily bad, just different. The book never felt like it got got close to the horror and terror of The Shining.

That said, it still tells a marvelous story about recovering from ones demons and moving on. Strangely, for a king book, I think the last 3rd of the book really came in strong and wrapped up the novel in a very fulfilling and well done manner.

The best Stephen King book I’ve read so far. With all the others I had some trouble with the pacing as it felt slow till the end when it’s so hurried and feels like everything happens at once.

This does not have that problem. It’s fast paced but keeps that pacing through the whole story. There is enough happening to keep it from getting boring but takes enough time to give the characters some depth. I really enjoyed it being a sequel to the shining but it having enough body to make it stand out on it self.

I wasn't able to get into this one because I didn't find Rose very interesting as an antagonist. Also cue King's usual insertion of sexual violence against children, depictions racial stereotypes, alcoholic stereotypes, and sexism.
