this book was the first i have read about Saudi Arabia and its culture. unfortunately it was written by a white non-Muslim foreigner, so i'm not sure how well it really speaks for Saudi Arabia, but the Saudi women interviewed seemed to be from a broad swath of society. it seemed to start out with the older and more conservative women who were hard to connect with. then we intermittently learned a bit about facets of the culture and history and put the women's comments into perspective better. it is amazing to see how fast the culture is evolving, so there is immense hope for those (or future young people) with the conservative and oppressive ideas to become more open-minded and flexible. i did also appreciate having a few women interviewed who were non-Saudis living in Saudi Arabia. they seemed to have quite a different perspective, especially those in the lower class had such a harsh life. the Saudi society has changed so much and seems to still have much to do. but, all cultures need to look at themselves and improve conditions for all people in their societies; im not blind to my own home country's weaknesses.
I wish there were more perspectives from lower socio-economic status women, however I can see the challenge in obtaining them. Regardless, this book was an interesting and easy read.

Queens of the Kingdom was such a good book, and I feel like I learned a lot. I just wish there were more stories about women from lower socio-economic groups as most of the stories seemed to be about privileged women
