I almost didn't finish this. It took about 80 pages to get into it, a lot of the prison scenes felt drawn out and predictable, and the last 100 pages were a drag.
I got the sense that the characters had been better introduced in the previous book, so without having read this I was a bit lost.

This book is the sequel to The Island which I read and loved . Starting this book I wondered would it live up to the first book which I utterly adored. Well I needn’t have worried as One August Night was a fabulous read. From the first page I was immersed into the book and the story. A wonderful read.

This is a lovely sequel to Victoria Hislop's book The Island. She is a great writer and great story teller and this book, just like the island, weaves a wonderful tale around some of the characters we met in the The Island. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am glad I reread The Island last year so that story was fresh in mind. I think without that I would have not felt such connection and familiarity with the characters or the place because as much as it is about the people it is about Greece.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my next read for August for a month in the title and this one was a much better read.
In fact I read this one in a day. This is the follow up book for The Island which I read many years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed. I've read many reviews of this one not having the same charm as The island but I enjoyed this one more. Whereas The island read as more factual story about the history Spinalonga and leprosy, this was more of a follow up story with less descriptive writing which I enjoyed. I loved following the journey of all the main characters after they left the island of spinalonga.
This sequel to The Island follows the lives of these people, tied by family, love, tragedy and redemption. mixed within the story is the beautiful description of Crete a beautiful island.
