This was not what I had hoped it was going to be. I was under the impression that this book was a horror/thriller about a cult that was really dark and twisted and had a big plot twist. Maybe if you're not looking too closely then this could be considered that, but not by much. There is a small and pretty predictable plot twist, that you only understand if you're actually paying attention to every detail, but otherwise I didn't find this very thrilling. Now that is totally on me for not understanding what I was getting into, but even if I had been under the right impression, I dont think I would have liked this at all. I'd say I was semi interested for the first 40% but after that it was just utter confusion. The entire book completely flips in content and pacing without much warning or explanation, so the entire time i was trying to connect things that didn't make sense together. I love a good unreliable narrator just like the next person, but once I'm spending more time trying to decipher whats real and what isn't, then you've lost me. It became clear very early that our main character was struggling with some sort of mental illness, but even without her I really didn't care about a single character. The writing style was interesting but became so repetitive, I mean, you can only read the word "bunny" so many times before going insane. There is a good 1/3 of the book that doesn't seem to fit pacing and content wise, that probably could have been omitted without much consequence. I can kind of see what the author was going for here, but with so many unanswered questions I can see why it gets lost on so many who read this. This would be perfect for you if you are looking for something slow-paced and open-ended, but if you want the vibes of a classic thriller then I'd look elsewhere. All in all, I would say this is not what it's advertised as, it's more like a story about a very lonely girl struggling with normal people things.

Review Summary : This book's premise is incredibly nuanced and unique to the point where I know I'll likely never read another story like it. I liked Samantha (to a degree), I liked Ava (as a companion to Samantha), and I enjoyed the academic writing ensemble from the bunnies to the professors. However, at the end of the day, this book read so unbearably slow for me. I listened to it on audiobook and failed to finish before my loan ran out the first time, so with 20% left I had to wait 2 weeks to receive it again. Then, when I got it off hold once again, I had to crank the speed up to x3 to get through it. I don't want to spoil anything, and with books as clustered with twists like this one, everything feels like a spoiler. My review is more just an opinion, reaction, and reflection on my reading experience. I do think this was a well crafted novel and I can see why people love it. I just hated it and had a bad time.

Rating: 2/5 . If you are enjoying the new wave of dark surreal fiction,  you'll really enjoy this. I recognize that I am burnt out from reading books of this tone/style and so maybe my feelings will improve in time, but right now this is where I'm at.

Lol ummmm what I’m the world did I just read???? Think like a Heathers, Mean Girls, Frankenstein, with some Alice in Wonderland allusions sprinkled throughout.

But on a more critical note, it was excellent and I devoured it in 24 hours.

It was abstract, the prose was beautiful without being too much of anything, and the magical realism was *chefs kiss.*

Part One and Part Three were strong; Part Two was a bit too much of a drug filled haze, but it did add to the story, it was just a bit slow.

Go read it, but check the trigger warnings!!!!

i thought people were exaggerating when they said this was the weirdest thing theyve ever read and that you would barely be able to comprehend it but they were sooooo right. the first half (part 1 and the beginning of part 2) is pretty put together for the most part, and i really really enjoyed it. the bunnies were my favorite characters and thats when they were utilized the most. it also reminded me a lot of some of my favorite movies like jawbreaker and heathers. however, they were really the only part of the book i really understood or cared to understand. its not that i didn’t care for the book as a whole, i did, and i do, but the second (?) act is when shit really hit the fan and i didnt really understand what was going on. the last few chapters were like a ginormous puzzle my brain barely had the energy to pick apart. but aside from all that, i think im able to understand the core of it all.
im just not the biggest fan of the whole cliche “it was all in her head” trope when i really expected something real out of it all, which would have made it all the more interesting.
but, still an enjoyable read, super camp and fun (for the most parts except for when it gets pretty gross) and i would recommend it to people who want to read something to think about for months after :)
