I don't know a lot of authors that can keep a series fresh after more than 10 books. Patricia Cornwell is no exception. I absolutely loved this series from the beginning, but the last few books have left me feeling blah. I bought them up through the next couple, so I'm going to give it another shot or so, but unless it peaks my interest again, I'll have to say goodbye. Bummer.

This was my first Scarpetta novel and I did really like it, although I must say I found it quite overwhelming due to the many different "pov" presented. I guess it's my fault as I wasn't familiar with the story before. Because I didn't know the characters I struggled a little at the beginning, and I often got lost between the many many characters and the somewhat long prose used by Cornwell. I also felt like not much happened in the overall plot during the course of the book, just more in the last 2 or 3 chapters. The story had a nice flow but it was rather slow. I loved the author's descriptive style and how the dialogues were just right. The plot was interesting as I'm a crime-mystery aficionado. And of course, now I want to be Kay Scarpetta when I grow up.

Not perfect by any means, but a good page-turner. I started it Sunday morning in the car and stayed up until 1am to finish it that night. Pretty good mystery but this one was light on the forensic science and seemed to be aimed at Cornwell's existing fans not new ones. I've only read one other by her (Postmortem, her first Scarpetta novel), and this is a major jump in time and events. Still, I'll go back and read all of the in-between titles. Good book to disappear into for awhile.

I read this out of order--picked it up after The Scarpetta Factor for...well, to see what I had forgotten. So much better than everything from Trace to The Scarpetta Factor. Maybe because no one is angry.

Anyway, I liked this one. Too many moving parts that Benton has spun up--that I find unlikely--but enjoyable all the same.

I have now read the entire series. Cornwell tries in Ch. 5, but she can't/doesn't explain Benton's "face" that they found in Point of Origin. To have his face there meant the FBI et al had already known the identities, habits, and lair of the killers and let the killing continue all to set up Benton's death.

I still like the book, but Kay is not angry enough at Marino, Lucy, or Benton at the festering heap of _____ Benton's deception made of her life. Nor the fact that his deception actually made things worse.

DNF at page 200, skim read to page 226. I no longer care about any of the characters in the series and this one is now following so many different perspectives it’s ridiculous. If I carry on I’m sure it would be a 3 star or less and I don’t want to waste the time on it. The writing is good but I just don’t like anyone in it!
