Set in the South pre-civil war, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn tells the story of Huck Finn's escape from an abusive father struggling with alcoholism, and his adventurous travels down the Mississippi with runaway slave Jim. It explores themes of identity and race, of racism and freedom, of right and wrong.

I have a complicated relationship with classics, where I want to read them all, but rarely get much enjoyment out of them. It was time for me to give another classic a go, this time The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and the experience wasn't all that enjoyable. Oftentimes, I couldn't get passed a lot of the language, and some of the over-the-top scenes. I didn't find myself absorbed in the story and passages often felt long-winded and drawn out. I think it is safe to say classics are definitely not my jam, but chances are I'll continue to pick them up every so often.

What I will say is there is definitely value to this book in a historical context, making in an important book for readers. I am convinced my experience would have been different if this had been assigned reading to dissect and discuss, as opposed to picking it up for the simple pleasure of reading.

would i pick this book up if it wasn’t an assigned reading for school? no. i think that says enough but i’ll elaborate. the plot felt boring and repetitive. everything was utterly useless and boring. in the end everything was for nothing since jim was already free. not even that, but many of the events in the novel occurred for no reason. they felt like fillers. i mean they probably were fillers. although this book is mainly plot based, i get the feeling all of this was to show huck’s character development throughout the novel and how he goes from compliant to all social norms to breaking out of his shell a bit (despite the fact he fell right back into who his character was at the beginning towards the end of the novel for no reason at all). frankly i think this book is badly written and was a complete waste of my time.

this is one of my summer reading books but however i am a reading whore so i will rate this honestly. i HATED it. not even because i have to read it for school but because of how spineless a lot of this book was. why is it considered a classic? god i don’t even know.
anyways what was the point of the king and duke? they had absolutely no purpose in the book. also finding out in the very last chapter that huckleberry’s dad died in like CHAPTER NINE what was that? there were some memorable themes that i can accept and learn from in this book like how people are always going to be horrible to eachother. we can see this theme in how humans treated slaves as less than; how humans were looked at in a different spectrum when it came to family or wealth. that i can accept and can condemn it to one star.
would i read this book willingly??? no absolutely not.
would i recommend this to others to read willingly? only to my enemies but to think about it again i don’t want to be known for suggesting this book i rather be caught dead. /
