Over much too soon

I always enjoy these short adventures with Johannes. This one was especially fun from the first to last page. I almost forgot that I was reading about two "villains". Great for filling spaces between Johannes Cabal books.

For how many sexual innuendos this book has due to some devilishly chitinous lady, it is strangely wholesome for a Johannes Cabal book. Lovely!

Oh my! This was amazing. Short story where Cabal visits hell one more time with the company of a spider devil woman. Absolutely hilarious, funny, weird, crazy. Loved it.

Zarenyia is such a great addition to this amazing cast. Can't wait for more, and I hope to see her again soon!

Yet another Machalo instance of me being terribly slow at buddy reads

So very pretty. Cabal is a sorcerer who summons Zarenyia, a spider-devil with a sexual appetite and a sense of humor. They descend together into Hell to search for another sorcerer who objects to being found and has his sights set on Cabal. Along the way, Cabal and Zarenyia kinda fall in friendship. It's adorable. Excellent pacing and although the language is quite dapper and literary, it has this fun, dirty edge to it.

The best of the short stories, imo. Great fun all around! I do hope Zareniya shows up again!

Normally I wouldn't feel the need to rate a short story this highly, but given A Long Spoon serves as our introduction to the delightful succubine devil Zarenyia and also features trashbag king and necromancer of some little infamy Johannes Cabal using a wand like an sociopathic German Harry Potter, I had to give stars where stars are due. It's an unlikely team up, especially given Zarenyia's personality compared to Johannes's, but they've got great chemistry and provide plentiful laughs as well as butt kicking. It makes me so glad Howard decided to include her in a full length novel-an excellent move on his part.

An excellent read with sharp jibes, wry humour and imaginative sketches of Hell and its lands. Expected no less from Jonathan L. Howard.

If you haven't read any of the other Johannes Cabal books then this isn't the place to start. A Long Spoon is much more whimsical than the rest of the series but in a dark and disturbing manner. A trip in to Hell with a Devil? Sure, why not?

In short Cabal summons a Devil to help get in to Pandemonium by way of The Abyss. The Devil, Zarenyia, isn't at all what he bargained for and honestly the rest of the story is overshadowed by their interaction which is masterfully done. Zarenyia really takes the cake in this one (but not the fishcake) and I'd really like to see more of her and luckily Howard leaves this possibility open. Hell I'd like to see a story or two involving her and different summoners.

As far as short stories go this one is really is a really fun romp. Hell it may be a novella because I can't really tell the difference but whatever it is I really enjoyed it. You don't have to know anything about the series to read this and enjoy it so it'd make a good starting point to Howard's writing if nothing else.
