This little book intersperses short chapters about Marlo’s life and family with stories about the childhoods of various comedians. Frankly, it’s very Marlo to share even the platform of her memoir with others, but her own stories were much more compelling. My favorite anecdote was that she got an ABC executive to read The Feminine Mystique, which convinced him to greenlight That Girl!

I enjoyed reading about Marlo Thomas' childhood--growing up as the daughter of Danny Thomas, and having his famous friends surrounding her. No wonder she's so confident, funny, and giving!

I really enjoyed this book, but perhaps it helps to love Marlo Thomas' work or be a fan of classic comedy. Read my full review here:

A charming little book. Marlo Thomas combines a memoir of growing up in Beverly Hills as the daughter of funny man Danny Thomas and surrounded by the giants of comedy like George Burns, Sid Caesar, Bob Hope, Milton Berle and Bob Newhart. She also includes stories of her own acting and writing career and marriage to Phil Donahue. In addition, there are interviews that Marlo had with the leaders of contemporary comedy--Chris Rock, John Stewart, Jay Leno, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, etc. to uncover who were their heroes of comedy growing up, when they discovered that they were funny, and how each approaches entertaining.

I grew up watching That Girl and probably watched all of Make Room for Daddy on Nick at Nite while doing college homework late into the night so I was already a fan of Marlo Thomas and her dad, Danny Thomas.
I enjoyed hearing about how she grew up with comedians around and enjoyed reading the interviews she did with a variety of them for this book. There were also photos and jokes throughout and it made for an interesting, but light read.
