Attack of the Mutant by R.L. Stine

 I recently got a bit of the nostalgia bug when thinking back to the Goosebumps books I read as a kid. Goosebumps, and by extension the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark series, definitely introduced me to the genre of horror. After Goosebumps I moved onto classics like Dracula and Jekyll/Hyde, then on to the gown up stuff throughout my life and to this day. Well, this nostalgia bug got me wanting to re-collect the original 62 run of Goosebumps books, and in their first run printings because of the amazing covers. Perhaps the best part of the series was the covers. Next up;
#25, Attack Of The Mutant
Because of the cover, I remember owning this one as a kid. I had no recollection of the story though, and so went into it hoping for the best. I was let down.
This is one of the more sillier installments of the Goosebumps books. I don't expect each and every one to be beholden to child-friendly horror exclusively, but at least a smidge of creep factor would be anticipated. Unfortunately this one has nothing of the sort. I feel like it's one of RL Stine's weaker ideas, like he simply saw the craze of comic books at the time (especially with the recent introduction of Todd Macfarlane's Spawn) and thought to capitalize on it in some way. But if he tried to parody comics in general, he didn't do his research, because it feels less like an homage and more like someone acting like they know about something when they really don't.
The protagonist's ongoing plight is decently crafted though, and you sympathize with poor Skipper. But the Masked Mutant and Gazelle characters are beyond silly, and most of the plot itself is spent just wandering around the villain's lair. Again, it felt like not much effort was put into this one, simply a general idea to capitalize on a current trend.
Oh well, they can't all be winners.
