E.O. Wilson presents his case for the immediate necessity for protecting and preserving biodiversity around the globe. The first half of the book is a primer in certain basic evolutionary biology concepts. The latter half of the book is Wilson's plea for humanity to take the necessary steps to save the countless species that have evolved and grown with us across eons. He presents his plea along with plenty of data, facts and solutions that have demonstrable merit. While Wilson can get a little tedious as he hammers home concepts and ideas with example after example, the point he makes is no less important because of it. This book was first published in 1992, and I think it is fair to say that the immediacy of his call to action in preserving and repairing the biodiversity of our planet has only increased since the days in which this book was written.

"Humanity coevolved with the rest of life on this particular planet; other worlds are not in our genes. Because scientists have yet to put names on most kinds of organisms, and because they entertain only a vague idea of how ecosystems work, it is reckless to suppose that biodiversity can be diminished indefinitely without threatening humanity itself"
Kind of textbook-ish at times. Still very compelling though

Wonderful book on biodiversity, as well as an interesting introduction to some assorted topics in ecology and evolution. Despite being 95% theory and history, it's moving as plot and as a description of our world. Like a more-focused, more inspiring Stephen Jay Gould. Highly recommended!
