Disappointing.
I was barely interested throughout - only finished it because it was a quick read and I've had it out the library so long it felt necessary!
The main character isn't particularly likeable, and is fairly 2D. He is confused for much of the book about how this world works and what's going on, and so you are too - but that confusion doesn't clear into anything particularly satisfying. His sidekicks are fun, but they're not enough to save this.

AHH! Brandon Sanderson is a genius!
But I'm sure you all already know that he's my favorite author and that I've been a big fan of his for a couple years now! I just... I'll be honest, I didn't have the highest expectations for this one (and by that I mean, medium-to-high-ish expectations.) I'm not a Sci-Fi girl, and I disliked Project Hail Mary. But oh my goodness, this book. Why should I even be surprised? I love everything that Sanderson writes; he never misses for me, and this one was just so incredibly unique and different from anything I've read from him before! The blend of futuristic tech and medieval times was BRILLIANT. Not only was it humorous, but it also brought up such fascinating questions. I had such a fun time exploring this alternate-dimension travel, and how the customs from England, and the Norse-adjacent gods, all mixed with the main character's slightly modern (and super fun to read, by the way) voice. And that brings me to the main character himself! There's something about stories where a character enters into a new situation which they're unfamiliar with, looks at their past from a new perspective, and goes through incredible change. Maybe that was even a little bit spoiler-y, so I won't go into it. But it was beautiful! I didn't expect to be so emotionally moved, along with giggling at intermittent parts of the story. And while I didn't love this as much as Tress (which isn't surprising; nothing can beat Tress yet in my eyes), I still thought it was a really cool read.
I wanted to mention something a little more specific to myself real quick! So I'm blind and read Braille, and when everyone was talking about the beautiful and charming illustrations, I'd automatically resigned myself to just enjoying the text and not knowing what the pictures looked like—which is standard for me, and I'm cool with that! But then I opened this book, and it was chock-full of detailed IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS! Now, I saw a few of these in Tress, but I think this book had way more images and cartoons, as well as the blind motifs for each chapter, and it was : incredible to see the amount of care put into the descriptions—if I do get image descriptions, and that's rarely, they're usually either auto-generated, incorrect and unhelpful, or less than a few words. So I really appreciate Brandon and his team for taking the time and effort to put descriptions into the secret projects. It means so much to me, and was such a pleasant surprise.
This book was a delight. I'll be thinking about it for a long time, I know. It effortlessly turned common tropes on their heads, similarly to Tress, while still keeping to some of the classics of fantasy and sci-fi. As our lovely main character might say, five stars. Incredible accessibility, perfect for a cozy reading afternoon. No complaints. Would highly recommend.
"But it was the builders, not just the takers, who changed the world."

Me ha gustado bastante, más de lo que esperaba. Tiene partes muy divertidas donde me he reído y disfrutado pero el final me ha parecido un poco flojo y trepidado. Personajes interesantes. Ambientación chula y rica.

This was a lot of fun! Just what I needed this month. Sure, it's not the Cosmere, but I still had a good time.

This is a nice easy read when you need one.
It's hung on an interesting idea, and balances plot with SF with humour.
And there's even room for a redemption arc, and at least one character who is not what they seem.
Read this after a heavy concept story or some non-fiction. Or on an airplane.
