love him or hate him, mr King is definitely a master of terrifying concepts. a few summers ago, I picked this up from the library but I only got through the foreword before I had to put it down, faced with the horror of the irreversible. I'm not really scared of King's pseudo-racist ideas of native American monsters or his version of evil but the death of a family member... that's too much to read about on a summer day. but the film version of this is one of my favorites so I had to read this eventually, and it really is one of his better works.
there's not as much strange, repressed horniness as in some of his other books, and his corny Americana vibes are pretty charming here (once again, maybe because I like the movie so much). the execution definitely does not live up to the premise, but I think that would be near impossible. don't really care for the actual scenes of horror violence, they're not very convincing, but overall the vibe is effectively bleak. fun times.

WILD. This was my 2nd King novel and it did not disappoint. King has a way of making even the mundane parts of books so intriguing and meaningful. The character interactions are so multifaceted and add so much to the story. I would not say this book scared me at all, but I absolutely felt the omg/wtf of it all. This story was so much more than the dread and gore- it really portrayed grief and relationships in such a beautiful way. Stephen King said this was his scariest book and didn’t want to publish it initially-and I can see why. It’s HEAVY but SO GOOD!

Pet Sematary is a chilling and psychologically disturbing horror novel that delves into the darkest corners of human grief and the temptation to defy the natural order of life and death. King's storytelling prowess is on full display in this novel, creating an eerie and tense atmosphere that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

The story revolves around the Creed family, who move to a rural town and discover a mysterious and ancient pet cemetery in the nearby woods. As the family faces tragedy and loss, the cemetery takes on a sinister significance, and the novel explores the devastating consequences of tampering with the boundary between life and death.

King's ability to create relatable characters and explore the complexities of human emotions is one of the novel's strengths. The grief and desperation felt by the characters are palpable, making the horror all the more intense. The exploration of the theme of death and the question of whether sometimes it's better to let go is thought-provoking.

The novel is not for the faint of heart, as it delves into gruesome and unsettling territory. It's a testament to King's skill as a horror writer that he can elicit such strong emotional reactions from readers. "Pet Sematary" is a disturbing and haunting work that lingers in the mind long after the book is closed, making it a must-read for fans of the horror genre and Stephen King's work in particular.
