Incredibly moving novel about the struggles of not only a woman but that of her family and people. A reminder that even through our darkest moments, as long as there is love, family and community, we will come to feel the light on our skin again.

Emotional, dark, challenging, insightful and inspiring!! This is such an important read and helps connect with the long history of settler colonialism and genocide in Palestine in a personal way which is so vital and urgent. I wish I was still doing my English course so I could analyse the shit out of this book. So beautifully written♥️

While I will never truly encompass the sheer amount of pain and suffering the characters of this novel survived, it made me feel at such unease with the injustice in this world. Injustice that we all created for ourselves.

This book is a memoir of a prisoner who fought for survival all her live, in all the best ways she knew. She makes attempts to make a good life for herself, to protect her family, and to allow her close ones the security she did not have herself, but her actions leave her scarred both physically and mentally. At the same time, she's becoming a refugee in an unfair world where there is no place she can truly call home.

It's a story about suffering, finding one's places, learning how to trust, and how to heal.

This book did something to me. Touched my soul. Made me so deeply invested in the topic, I spend an equal amount of time reading the book and researching the history of Palestine and the conflict. With zero intention to take sides, but to truly understand the greater picture.

And I am so very glad that I read this book.

This book was not what I expected. In fact, it was 1000x more than what I expected. Susan Abulhawa’s powerful and beautiful writing made me feel like I was reading Nahr’s real memoir instead of a fictional novel. Shamefully, I knew very little about the details of the struggle between Palestine and Israel prior to starting this book. I knew broad pieces of the conflict, but that was it. Nahr’s story is a tragic story, but Nahr is not tragic. She is strong, she is fierce, and she is resilient. I feel like in war, it is impossible to have revolutionary women because too often we are used as pawns, bait, and collateral damage. Nahr does not allow her situation to define her, but rises up to own her power and her voice. I gave Against the Loveless World 5 ⭐️s and can’t wait to discuss it in full at book club.

It’s a masterpiece
