This book was...fine. A little predictable, a little derivative, characters a little shallow. (I would have much preferred to just read a historical novel about Rose!)
I docked her a star for mentioning her other book (Lucy's mother reading a book with an "ethereal baby dress" on the cover), and for describing the main character "washing her few dishes" twice within a couple of chapters. An editor should have caught that.

A good quick read for the beach/vacation. It's not the kind of book I would get any major revelations out of. Nothing compared to her earlier book, [b:The Memory Keeper's Daughter|10441|The Memory Keeper's Daughter|Kim Edwards|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266450174s/10441.jpg|2868431] which I truly loved.

It's a really calm book. Some of it is a little unbelievable (like why does she care so much about Rose when for the first half of the book, she has VERY little evidence that Rose has to do with the windows). The whole story of Rose though is pretty good, I just wish it was revealed in a more interesting way. Lucy just sort of hints at stuff the whole book, then when something about Rose's life actually is uncovered, it's casual and unsurprising. Lucy is a little crazy and mean sometimes, but I suppose it makes her more real. I dunno. I liked her as the narrator.
This was a pretty good read. A nicely written family drama/mystery. The one thing that I didn't buy was Lucy's so called drive/compulsion/etc. to find out the details of her mysterious ancestor Rose. Everything else was fine and worked, but not Lucy's motivation that drives the entire book. In the end, it was a small point, but enough to warrant a lower rating.
I’m glad I stuck with it as the last third was great, it just took such a slow amount of time to get there, but looking back I guess all the preamble was justified.
