The Lake of Dreams

Bought this as an airplane book and really enjoyed it. I like how one of the characters in this novel is reading her previous novel. It all wraps up nicely, but the mystery was how she was going to make it all come together.

Wow. This is the most beautiful book I've read in a long time. Poetic and lyrical. A woman named Lucy searches out the story of a long-lost aunt, and in the midst of it finds her own story. I love finding out all the family secrets along with Lucy. This book speaks to so much I'm exploring right now: feminism, Wisdom, ruah (Hebrew for spirit - feminine term), the power of women, women in the Bible, beauty, a voice. A powerful read, a garden of flowering truth. Lovely.

I really enjoyed this. It wasn't too heavy but very interesting and nicely written.

I would give this book 3 1/2 stars if I could. The book got better and better after about halfway through. Makes you want to do some family tree research.

I was really excited to hear Kim Edwards had come out with a new book because I loved "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" so much! This book was okay. It didn't really pick up till about 3/4 of the way through. Even then, I felt like conversations between characters was really abrupt. Sometimes I felt like the shift from one event to the other was so sudden, I kept waiting for wrap-up from the other event to occur. It still was a good read and kept my interest but I guess I was looking for something more.

I connected with the characters and found the mystery motivating to read more. I found there were scenes or information that was repetitive in the story, a little distracting to the story.

Ok this review is torn because while I absolutely loved the plot, the author lost me with all of the flowery descriptions. Believe me when I say the book is written beautifully the author does an amazing job of describing the scene and making you feel like you are there but in my opinion she just goes overboard with each changing light she feels the need to give us two more paragraphs on those changes. Now for the good part; woah the story had me hooked! Long lost relative from the early 1900s so flashbacks and hand written letters and some good old fashioned detective work slowly peels back the layers on who this person is and what her story is, all the while the main character is going through her own trials and tribulations and we learn how these stories come together and what they mean for this main character and her family. If you have the time it’s a good read but it had its moments where it just drags and I had a hard time getting through it
