Fascinating book that should be essential in every Australian school classroom.

Normally literature on animals written for kids focuses heavily on animal behaviour and basic features, but this flips the script but introducing the (often-times flawed) perspectives of early explorers.

It includes many fascinating artworks from the time, many based upon verbal accounts of the animals (the platypus section is interesting).

It's a quick read to and great way to introduce kids to history and indigenous perspectives (indigenous names for all of the animals are included, and many of them I hadn't heard before). I just wish the author had included cockatoos or budgies!

Overall if you're a teacher or parent of pre-teen kids, find yourself a copy.
