Oooh boy. As I cannot relate to neither the diaspora, the violence of the story, the family dynamics nor the experience of queerness, it's kind of a hard book to review — but I will say one thing: there are only two books I have read in one sitting over the last five years, and this is the second one. (And I started at 11.30pm, which means that I will have a very bad day at work, but I don't regret it one bit.)

It's tender and complicated, and the characters make some really bad choices at time, but that's life. I guess that's Amma, in the end: it's life. It also made me real hungry.

(A lady in reviews complained about how Josephina's SA dissolved "into nothing of consequence but a load of woke nonsense" and like. First that just made me more curious, but also if you couldn't feel the repercussions through every other page I'm not sure we were truly reading the same book.)

this is a kiwi novel

A beautiful book about family and how each separate member suffers and struggles on their own but is made stronger when together. Each journeys to better understand and connect with the other. Strong female characters fill these pages. One element of the family rift wasn't explained or explored enough for me.
