cool . this collection really let it out. a gratifying read for you who is mystified and frustrated by pathology, medical meddling of any kind. if you are amused by the dymanics between doctor and patient, if you are uncovering the truth behind what lets medicine exist. this is a smart ad also, sexy, and also, heartwrenching collection about what happend to our hearts when we let nature be categorized by science!

Poems on themes of queerness, mental health, and STI stigmas. Structured around an excerpt of the DSM-I (from 1952), it fractures and reframes around these concepts throughout the four sections. A couple titles get revisited exactly across the book: Psychotherapy, On Prep or on Prayer; while Diagnosis progresses from Pre to Post. Madness felt more intense than I was expecting, even though it’s candidly so from the start. I had to let it sit for a while, but when I dug back in complexity was all the richer. this is stunning, and rarely difficult. sam sax examines mental illness and addiction, specifically, their medical treatments- but too with a focus on homosexuality having been deemed a mental illness requiring treatment. it’s utterly terrifying and so gorgeously written. it’s wild and fierce and visual and breathtaking. it’s been a while since i’ve read such a good book of poetry in which every single poem works together to create a full single piece, a book. it hurt, and i learned from it.

“spare me the quilt & blanket

spare me the look
in his eyes when he takes me
careful as a poison inside him

spare me the lecture
on the survival
of my body
& i will spare you my body”
