The Red Tent

Rather than rewriting I’m going to simply copy the text I sent to my friend who encouraged me to move this up on my tbr list. I really could have enjoyed this much more without so much descriptive of certain events. If those don’t bother you might love this!

Text to friend: Ok where do I begin…just finished! I’m going to gift it with a 3 but leaning on the side of 2 rather than 4. BUT…I think it’s like some other books and the sex and rape descriptions were more than I could handle. The entire first 10% was sex based (literally) and at 14% I was like omg how much do I trust Lola. Lol. I think I was near the 70% mark the last time I even kinda sorta considered throwing in the towel but by then I loved Dinah too much to do that. I would love more books with this premise but rape and graphic sex are my trigger points that I usually shut down. Less graphic and more storyline and this would be a total winner!

One of my favorites. Beautiful, strong, defiant women

I wasn't sure when i started and wanted to dump the book but i am glad i stuck it out. Written from the view point of Delilah, sister of Joseph in the bible. It tells the story of how women fared back in the day and the relationships formed in the "red tent" when women were on their periods or have just given birth.

Delilah was barely spoken about in the bible so i was pretty impressed with the world the author created starting from how Jacob married sisters, Leah and Rachel and their handmaidens and the children that came from them and how it weaved into Delilah's tragic love story.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

After getting myself so pumped up for this book, I wound up abandoning it. It was a lot slower and less eventful than I had anticipated.

I made it approximately half way and had to stop because I was sick of hearing the author go on and on about each characters name, place in the family, and origin. I hoped the story would pick up, but sadly it didn't.

could not put this one down! old bible story played out by the women's point of view. vivid

I love the insights gained on the historical setting of the culture - especially for women. Hearing this account in Dinah's voice gave it so much power. The author highlighted the strength and wisdom of women transcends cultures, time and generations. A must read for all women.

A well-written Midrash
