It honestly took me a long time to warm-up to this book and the storyline, but now finishing it, I can't stop thinking about it.
The story tells the life of Dinah, daughter of Jacob, and her mothers during biblical times. She is only briefly mentioned in the bible and because of my faith growing up, I kept on wondering when Jacob would become the champion or when his god and the god of his fathers would come to save the day.
But, that doesn't happen.
Without this sort of triumph, I kept wondering what is the purpose of telling this story. And then I finally got it.
For me, the purpose of this story isn't some triumphant god that we've heard about or his main man, but it's for the people who are left out and often forgotten; the women that helped him become who he was. Their story is rarely told and needs to be said. What they struggle with and what they do on a daily basis was often just disregarded altogether, but these women are just as much responsible for history as the men who are often cast as the lead role. For this story and the courage to show what another perspective could've been like, I am entirely grateful.
