Amateur teen detectives, with danger and cliffhangers, alongside ready use of 21st century technology (Facebook, Google, phone apps, home lab mass spectrometers and DNA sequencers….)

Red herrings, and questions of right and wrong, with a constant countdown from 48 HOURS (annoying gimmick) since the kidnapping occurred.

Protagonist’s best friend is kidnapped to kickstart the plot. Death:

the ultimate villain/criminal is killed in a collision with a train at a level crossing to end a car chase. No one else is injured, but the child protagonists witness this.
