This book was a grim exploration of the socio-economic situation of post-Thatcher Glasgow and a cautionary tale against boy moms.

This was heavy. Oof.

“It was James that changed it. The pinkie that had lain next to his own crossed over and locked under his. The electrical current they had burned at the border jumped on his skin and he was scorched.”

love how i decided to read this book first over shuggie bain because i was worried shuggie would be too heavy for me to consume right now and now i’m pretty sure they have the same amount of heaviness in them. i love a good character book and there was some really great writing/prose throughout but boy was it difficult for me to get into. the first half of the book just felt so long and i couldn’t really get a good grasp of the pacing/structure but once i got to around chapter 12 i was invested. my boys mungo and james need to be protected they are too pure for this world. i appreciated the approach of presenting toxic masculinity in this and its relationship to queer identities especially in the early 90s (i think that’s when this takes place idk it never really said i had to look it up lol). by the time it got to the end i just wanted more and was sad that it was over. overall, i enjoyed it once i got invested in the characters but just wish it didn’t take so long to get there because i was struggling for real. anyways go scottish gay boys!!!!!!

The most devastating book I have ever read. Kind of slow, but easy to get sucked into. One of the most immersive books I’ve read. It felt so real. The family dynamics, the grapple with queerness, the exploration of falling in love, ugh. SO extremely well written.
