somehow both devastating and hopeful. for a relatively simple plot, it often becomes sprawling and much more expansive than the small Scottish town setting, which isn’t a bad thing. all the characters feel realised and individual. it’s nothing new, but I love how the accents are written into the text, just adds a whole new layer to the world

Just so good. Whenever I was not reading this book, I was thinking about it and wondering when I would be able to read it again. I think there's something so engaging in good character-building and smart use of space and time. I became attached to so many characters, and even when they made bad decisions (and it happened often) it was always understandable and made sense for who they were and what they were going through. I'll compare this book "Lie with me" and "Swimming in the dark" because they are both similar books I read this year that I didn't like as much: I felt like those books didn't take the time to build characters and their relationships deeply (maybe the length of the books is at fault there), whereas this one felt like an intricate character study, and the romance was just adding to that rather than the focus of the book. But even the relationship between James and Mungo here was built slowly and very very sweet and believable. I felt so much for Mungo and his relationship with his mother, and I was terrified that ultimately he would let his circumstances get the better of him. Teared up so many times! So so lovely.

Check the trigger warnings for this one - I did not expect the rape storyline/scenes and it was quite graphic/intense.

Absolutely loved this book. The characters were so well written, they leapt off the page. I absolutely loved Mungo, as well as his relationship with Jodie. He's such a gem. Some qualms - I wish there had been more chapters with James prior to
the kiss
just to better establish James' character as well as the friendship with Mungo. I just found it hard to care about James or understand why Mungo liked him so much. There were also some moments here and there where the writing felt a bit fanfiction-y, moments like "he looked at the pale boy" (paraphrasing) which jerked me back to reading merlin bbc or harry potter slash when I was 14.

Otherwise, absolutely loved this one. Gorgeous, I so want to know what happens after the ending. I've grown so attached to Mungo! I'm definitely going to read Shuggie Bain now.
