This book took me by the throat and broke my heart and i still couldn't put it down. The storytelling is atmospheric and phenomenal, the characters are so tangible and human. I cannot recommend this book enough, but due to the weight of the subject matter it's one you have to pick up in your own time. A new favorite, for sure. Violen  but soft and loving, this book is worth every penny. Please read it.

“Young Mungo” creates a great depiction of how toxic masculinity treats young boys in society. My love for Mungo is deeper than a fictional character should be able to make me feel. But his love and suffering feels too real and I can’t help it. He will surely haunt my mind for a long time.
Also this book stomped on my heart so many times I felt like it couldn’t get worse. It did.

a very emotional and dark read (check tw's before reading!) that also could be really beautiful at times. the prose were stunning, and the characters were very complex and interesting, but the pacing just bothered me a bit. i found it to be extremely slow with nothing going on up until the 50% mark, then so much begins to happen and it feels like the story is really starting, then the ending feels really fast - like we barely have time to process all of the super important things that just happened! it's not that the ending lacks depth or meaning - it feels gratifying although ambiguous at the same time - it just feels very fast. i still really liked it, but it's not for everyone and it isn't perfect!

i can't stop thinking about this quote though:

“Mungo’s capacity for love frustrated her. His loving wasn’t selflessness; he simply could not help it. Mo-Maw needed so little and he produced so much. So that it all seemed a horrible waste. It was a harvest no one seeded, and it blossomed from a vine no one tended. It should have withered years ago. Yet Mungo had all this love to give and it lay about him like ripened fruit and nobody bothered to gather it up."

first of all, this book needs a fucking content warning jesus christ
anywayyy, the pacing was a bit off for the first 150 pages in my opinion bc nothing happened and it was getting slightly boring imo
the writing is great though it‘s just the plot (and how graphic it is) that I struggled with
also, this book is advertised in such a weird way?? like people need to start making it clear when a book is as violent as this one is because they really didn‘t and I don‘t like when stuff like this is being jumped on me (my bad for not looking up the content warnings first, i guess)
