“…he could never share the hurt, because it would cloud their eyes and some part of them would wonder what he had done to deserve it.”
oh I’m broken. My heart is broken. And then it was healed. In my heart they live all the way to 2015 and got married. That’s what I like to believe.

This story has really stayed with me and my impression of it has only improved since finishing it weeks ago. I listened to the audiobook and loved the narrator, he really added to my immersion in the story. I don’t read a lot of Scottish novels and hearing about the catholic/protestant divide in Scotland felt familiar but new. The story has some truly tragic and disturbing scenes (check the trigger warnings) but is not without it’s joyful moments. I find addictions related content to be very depressing but when it’s in a novel this good it’s worth it. Will definitely read more from this author.

A beautifully written but heartbreaking portrayal of poverty, alcoholism, sexuality, homophobia and sexual abuse.

Stuart explores all of the issues above in a completely open and raw manner that does not sensationalise or trivialise.

The book captures life in Glasgow during the 80’s exceptionally and whilst some may struggle with the language used it is, within the limits of fictional writing, accurate.

I would recommend this book to anyone and believe I will be thinking about it for a long time to come, but for most it will be worth reading the trigger warnings prior.

This book was too brutal for me, I think it's one of the most violent books I've ever read and I really struggled to get through it. The depictions of abuse are pretty harrowing and visceral and I had to brace myself to listen to more of it. That said, I really liked the narrator, and I liked learning a bit more about Glasgow and the social issues and history and the characters have somewhat stuck with me, but more by force than anything else lol.
