There are three main characters in this story. Initially, they come together but eventually become separated, and reunite later on. The story follows their individual lives and occasionally shows one of the other characters in cameos. The story focuses on a single mother, her introverted son, and a third person who becomes an integral part of their family and their daily lives. The passage of time is quick throughout the narrative. It's a unique combination, and the story itself is also unique, exploring themes of love, expectations, hurt, hate, reunion, life challenges, and societal norms. It starts with a heartwarming tone but ends up with the reader's heart shattered.

Meet the Ramdin-Chetan family: forged through loneliness, broken by secrets, saved by love.

The story of Betty Ramdin, her son Solo and their lodger Mr Chetan, is one big hot mess of a story about different forms of love. The unbounding love that is between a Mother and Son, following the death of Husband and Father, who was an abusive alcoholic, and Solo's flight from Trinidad to live with his Uncle and his family in New York. The platonic love that grows between Betty and Mr Chetan, contrasted with his hot, passionate loving of men. The second father relationship of respect and affection between Solo and Mr Chetan, which helps them both as they try to understand their places in two very different societies.

This was a really unique take on a “kitchen sink” style family drama, predominantly set in Trinidad. Even though the country didn’t form an obvious backbone of the story, it did factor in as a character in itself, lending a colour and culture that elevated the tension and levity all at once. Please be warned that this book is so dark in places, but like any good family unit, the darkness is accompanied and sometimes even complemented by truth and the occasional wry observation.

I wasn't expecting anything in this book. It is much heavier than I thought it was going to be but I still really enjoyed the story of family. I laughed a little, cried a few times, and my jaw might have dropped more than once. Also I did the audio and love that it was narrated by the author.

Please note: if you are looking for a review about the rep in it, I cannot give you that. I am a white lady in the U.S please look for reviews by Trinidadians on that.
