Some of the language/humour is slightly dated but mainly this is a timeless & funny story.

Thing that surprised me most is that 'mawidge' is in the text rather than just being a line read

I couldn't get past how misogynistic it was and how much body shaming there was. Really disappointing - the movie is so fantastic!

A fun and goofy sort of adventure book wrapped up in a satirical premise. It's pretty good, full of humor and abject ridiculousness as it should be. The abridgement premise can be a bit tiresome at times, but overall adds to the book's charm. It's one of the rare instances, though, where the movie might be better than the book, if only because the film slightly tones down the in universe sexism; insofar as that there was a bit much of the 'women are helpless property of their husbands' going on. Buttercup just constantly getting slapped around by literally all of the male characters and the whole 'shut up woman and do what I tell you' that perpetually follows her keeps the book from hitting a proper 5 stars for me.

Oh, where do I start with this?

First up the author is the same person, who wrote the screenplay for the movie. So the humour, some of the dialogue and the overall feel is basically exactly the same. Just that the book has more time to elaborate. Which means if you enjoyed the movie, you will also enjoy this.

Secondly the entire thing of inventing an author, a country and framing it “autobiographically” is honestly iconic and adds so much to the humour.

Now I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of the romance in the movie, but surprisingly I liked it here a lot more. Mainly because we saw Westley and Buttercup interact more. Especially the bonus chapter after the main story (which was added in a later edition) was very sweet, really loved it.

The only negative thing I can say is that the author is a bit weird about women. The movie has some bits that made me think that, and reading this just confirmed it but also explained who was responsible for it. But it is a minor thing, all in all.

It’s been years since I’ve read The Princess Bride. And oh do I love the story, but it was so different listening to this abridged version, I believe I read the original all those years ago. But at the same time, despite knowing the movie by heart, there was a lot of stuff I didn’t remember from the book, & it was like reading it for the first time all over again. I quite enjoy that feeling. It’s "Tru Luv"!!!
"My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die."
