I enjoyed this book for the most part. I liked how the love triangle was handled. Usually, I'm not a fan of love triangles. They usually have a clear winner in the mind of the audience, the characters, or both. But this story felt a little different. I genuinely felt for both love interests and wanted all of them to be happy. I would switch between favoring one or the other. But it never felt like there was a clear 100% winner until the very end. But even still, it left questions open for the next book. I enjoyed her devotion to her mother, home, and heritage. It wasn't the best book I've ever read, but I definitely enjoyed it and plan to read the next one.
Let's just face it. Liwei is toxic after Xingyin decides not to stay with him. He should have respected her decisions, even if he didn't understand them. Even though Xingyin did have feelings for him, he should have respected her boundaries and not tried to push her. Kissing her without permission, after she clearly didn't want it, was a total ick for me. But they were childhood friends and I'm a sucker for that. Wenzhi was amazing til the end. I was so sad to discover that he was also toxic. Poor girl deserves better!
