I bought this to read the Tom DeFalco-Herb Trimpe-Barry Windsor Smith Machine Man miniseries. The aforementioned miniseries was great. Unfortunately, the rest of the book was on the low side of average. Even the far future 2020 setting was boring and inconsistently portrayed. BWS was great, though.

A fun collection of the various stories featuring the anti-hero Iron Man of the future, an odd character who popped up in various areas of the Marvel Universe but strangely not in Iron Man's own title.

As is the case with these types of collections, with various writers and artists, the stories vary in quality. The introductory Spider-Man story works fairly well as a tragedy for Iron Man 2020, setting down the roots of the character as an aggressive, insecure man trying and failing to live up to the example of his predecessor. The entire four issue Machine Man series from 1984, where the character made his first chronological appearance, features a thoroughly pedestrian story by Tom DeFalco, but is saved by the gorgeous Barry Windsor-Smith art. The remaining stories in the book never really rise above "not bad"; a recent solo story by new creators Daniel Merlin Goodbrey and Lou Kang shows particular promise, with a great fun idea (like Iron Man suits being piloted by extra-intelligent fetuses) being featured every few pages.

Pretty fun if you can get a discount or library copy, as it's not really worth the $35 Marvel's charging for it.

A collection of appearances of Iron Man 2020 including the Machine Man run he debuted in (I think), a Spider-Man Annual, a Death's Head cross-over, a What If? comic and his own mini-run.

It's a mixed bag, as you can expect from a random collection, but it's pretty fun to see how the character was introduced and how he developed over the years. That being said, he doesn't have too many appearances!

Thought I'd read it since we have a year left till 2020, and I appreciate it's all collected in one book :)
