My mouth was agape for like 75% of this book. You truly should’ve seen my face when the protagonist briefly considers mining some family myth of Cherokee heritage for writing inspiration. This was a searing commentary on the publishing industry, but also of white women. I see many of the feminist women I’ve known over the years reflected in this protagonist - who truly believes she’s just doing her best. Don’t they all?

The author has written that this is meant to be read in one sitting. I did just that and came out with the same vague sickly feeling that accompanies falling wayyyyy too deep in a reddit hole, just as she intended.

kuang is such a brilliant writer solely for creating the most unlikeable main character i have ever had the displeasure of witnessing. my blood was boiling multiple times in almost every chapter. kuang CAN write anything, although i might prefer her less mainstream writing…tbd

I loved this book. When I got towards the end, I had a hard time coming back into it because the Juniper's anxiety was so intense and I was having a hard time separating my own feelings from Juniper's. However, I did love this book and I will be recommending it to many people.

What a wild ride. One of the best books I’ve read this year. I loved that even though the whole book is from June’s perspective, we still are given enough information to see her objectively and understand that she’s an unreliable narrator of her own story. The questions around race, diversity, who gets to vs who should tell a story, and the insights into the publishing world are fascinating and well-explored. Highly recommend.

Very conscious of this Goodreads review because they crop up so often in the book… but what an AMAZING book - absolutely devoured it. Would 10/10 recommend
