Had been putting this book off since opinions on it seemed very polarized in the AsAm communities - people either love it or hate it. After finally reading it myself, I found it to be kinda just …ok?
The writing style is very easily readable and I sped through it in almost one sitting. The horror aspect felt minimal and campy and the twist predictable, which people may or may not like. The plot was moved 60-ish% through twitter and email interactions between the protagonist and other characters.
This story might feel unfortunately familiar to folks who has a pulse on twitter publishing scandals and issues, especially those working in POC/Queer creator circles, but the book almost felt tame in comparison to the real life cases I’ve seen unfold online.

No doubt that RF Kuang can write well, but I struggled to connect with any of the characters, it felt a bit too self-insert-y and the ending was a bit random
Εξαιρετικά ευφυές βιβλίο με εξαιρετικά εκνευριστική πρωταγωνίστρια που ίσως τελικά να είναι τόσο εκνευριστική γιατί μοιάζει στη μέση λευκή αναγνώστρια, δηλαδή σε μένα. Ο τρόπος που διαπραγματεύεται το πιο επίκαιρο θέμα της εποχής μας -τη συμπερίληψη, είναι ιδιοφυες.
Υπάρχει πραγματική συμπερίληψη; Μήπως πέρα από τον καταφανή ρατσισμό υπάρχει κι εκείνος ο ρατσισμός ο υπόγειος που γίνεται στο όνομα της διαφυλετικότητας καταπιέζοντας αλλά υποκλεβοντας ταυτόχρονα την ταυτότητα των μειονότητων;
Αυτό το βιβλίο κάνει αυτό που πρέπει να κάνει ένα σύγχρονο βιβλίο: ανοίγει μια πολύ σημαντική συζήτηση και διεγείρει προβληματισμούς. Γίνεται γρήγορα πιο dark απ ότι περίμενα και το τέλος έσωσε το βιβλίο, παρόλο που περίμενα το αντίθετο.
Το μόνο που δεν μου άρεσε ήταν πόσο εύκολα εξαπατήθηκα από το #trend ότι πρόκειται για page turner βιβλίο, γεγονός που δεν ίσχυε για μένα. Άλλο ένα hot topic στο τομέα του βιβλίου, όπως περιγράφεται πολύ εύστοχα και στο ίδιο το βιβλίο.
