DID NOT FINISH

Really did not like the main character. I know that’s the point. I just didn’t want to live in the head of someone who was okay doing what she was doing.

If the author wanted to tell a story of a plagiarizer with a white woman victim complex, it was genius to position her so closely to someone like Athena, a hugely successful Asian woman. From the beginning you can see how jealous June is of Athena, and how she uses each one of Athena’s perceived flaws or shortcomings to justify stealing from her. Then she builds an echo chamber around herself of people to assure her she’s doing the right thing and that others are being overly critical of her. June eventually digs herself so deep into a lie that she stoops to incredible lows to protect herself.

Maybe ordinarily I would be dissatisfied with a book in which there’s zero character development, but this one, it made total sense. Of course June, the one constantly complaining about how hard it is to be a straight white woman from Philly, will continue to figure out a way through. Every time you think she might finally give it up and take some accountability, nope.

This book was intriguing, funny, thought provoking, and ridiculous (I mean…. an altar to Athena with kung pao chicken from the local Chinese restaurant bffr). One of my favorites this year.
