This is *actually* the best book ever. The best characters, the best plot, and the greatest twist of all time.

I should point out right away here that I only read the actual Princess Bride part of the book, since I consider Buttercup's Baby to be a separate epilogue novella (which is was basically written as) and I'm not particularly in the mood to read it right away. When I do eventually read it, I'll toss an edit up to add my thoughts.

As someone who LOVES the film, this has always been on the list of books to check out for me. I had known that the two were very similar (as a result of William Goldman writing both the novel and the movie's screenplay), but I had never realized just HOW similar they were.

However, this is also one of the rare instances where I think I actually prefer the movie over the book.

Where the book is full of wit and charm of its own, and the notes from the fictionalized version of Goldman were hilarious and gave a real meta-humour edge to the story, I couldn't stop thinking about the movie as I read, and just how much life was really breathed into it by the amazing cast--to the point where I found the film versions of the characters to be considerably more likeable than their book counterparts, and it became a fixation point for me as I read, somewhat dulling the experience of the book. (Especially book Buttercup. My goodness, she's such an idiot in the book and is saved so much by Robin Wright's charm. Same goes for Westley--he's quite an ass on page, but on screen Cary Elwes just gives him so much likeability.)

I still liked the book, obviously, and I don't mean to pull so much comparison to the movie in this review, but it was such a sticking point for me when I was reading. The book is still very good. But as a fan of the movie, I found there wasn't much that felt entirely new aside from some details about Fezzik and Inigo that do really flesh out their backstories.

It really is a rare credit to the adaptation that it is so nearly perfect that it practically outshines its source material, considering that the book is still a whole lot of fun on its own.

Yeah. Not much to say about it aside from check it out if you're curious, but don't expect a sudden deep understanding of the story if you're already a fan of the film.
