This book is basically the Mayan version of the Da Vinci Code. If you like the Da Vinci Code, you'll like this one :)
With this book, I finish the PopSugar 2020 challenge!
The story of 12-21 is very appropriate for what is going on in our world today - there are many similarities but there are also many factors that have nothing to do with today's pandemic. So if reading about this sort of topic bothers you, I wouldn't recommend it.
I give it a strong 3.5 stars. I've always been fascinated with these kind of stories but this one throws some Mayan culture into it, so a different kind of a twist. It held my interest though certain parts were not my cup of tea.

I enjoyed this "intellectual thriller" a lot! Nice combination of suspense, history and problem solving,
GOSTEI BASTANTE. O AUTOR INVESTIGOU OS TEMAS MAIAS E EXPLORA UMA POSSIBILIDADE DE CATÁSTROFE PLAUSÍVEL E ASSUSTADORA O QUE INCENTIVA A ACELERAR A LEITURA ATÉ AO FIM. FIM DE UMA ERA OU FIM DOS TEMPOS MODERNOS!!!
I really wanted to finish this book before 12:21. After failing that, I lost a little of my steam. It was a little more interesting when it seemed like I might be reading about a possible apocalypse. And really, it's a plausible depiction even though it lost a little of its potency.
The book itself is pretty decent. There is a lot of predictability, but with some definite surprises. There is one point toward the end where I felt the book unraveling a bit, but it gathers itself back up and ends okay.

Definitely a page turner just like his previous book, "The Rule of Four". I'm not a big fan of apocalyptic fiction but the details about modern medicine and the mayan civilization are so gorgeously written and nicely placed within the story that even if you were clueless about these things before you'd definitely revel in the new information.
Part Outbreak, part DaVinci code... 12.21 is thrilling, intelligent look at how civilization can destroy (or save) itself.
This could be such a crazy long review that I'm going to have to do my best to reign myself in because, honestly, no one wants to read a 2 page review. It has been a very long time since I have stumbled onto a book that kept me so engrossed that I stayed up well into the night. I didn't like the DaVinci Code and found myself skimming in so many places in that novel just to get through it. This one I never skimmed. Even when the scientific explanation went well over my head, or when I was thankful for my Kindle's dictionary, I kept reading. The mix of characters, situations, history defining present circumstances...it was such a well wound spool of creative intrigue that I couldn't help myself from continuing. I'm not even a fan of thriller or suspense type novels and I still devoured this one thanks to the impeccable writing style of the author. With masterful ingenuity, the author wraps so many straggling threads together that it was impossible for me not to grow attached to the characters and their parts in the story. Perfect for a cross country airplane ride or a long, dark night, this is a book that will keep you turning the pages until the dramatic conclusion.

Decent thriller about the 2012 end of the world craze. A few too many coincidences to make it entirely believable and the end sort of fizzles out.
