The payoff at the end made getting through the middle worth it. I’m glad I persevered because I thought the ending was fantasticly unexpected. We love a good antiheroine mixed with period piece drama, unreliable narrating, subtle “witchcraft,” and

the changing of hands of a wealthy crooked patriarchy to a woman many times scorned 👏

This book is long and the middle is bogged down with too much unnecessary intrigue. Then we get to a long legal battle. Finally things start to fall into place and questions are answered.  I appreciated the payoff at the end, but it needed a bit less padding in the middle.
