unreliable narrator
tale! slightly gothic, historical mystery of red, growing up under a cloud of unknown and seeking out her true story and family as she grows up and gains agency. great motifs of tarot and the ocult, some great twists and turns.

I hesitated about what rating to give this book, because until the ending I was fully ready to give it five stars. As much as I loved the plot twist, it was a bit hard for me to make sense of the story once everything was revealed.

The Square of Seven is an incredible tale of long hidden secrets, greed, power and the corruption that wealth brings in the heart of men, suspicions of murder, both true and untrue, love and regret, and lies, a lot of lies. Oh and fortune telling, of course.

Things I liked about this book

I loved how immersive the story was, how much detail was always given. I also loved the fortune telling bit, the moments where you wonder if it is real magic or just an elaborate trick, if the cards were manipulated or fell naturally. The tension in some scenes was amazing, I found myself reading through pages as fast as I could just to know what was going to happen. I really liked the multiple povs, that added to the mystery and kept bringing revelations and plot twists. The fact that not a single character was who I thought they were was also incredible, a true writing magic trick if I can say. Overall, I really loved that book and it got me back into reading.

Things I liked less

They were a few moments were the story seemed to drag a bit, especially at the beginning but I’m glad I kept reading because it gets incredibly interesting afterwards. As I said before, I’m a bit conflicted about the ending but I think people who really like plot twists could appreciate it greatly. Apart from that, I honestly have nothing else to criticize, and those aren’t major issues imo.

Who I would recommend this book to

Obviously, if you like historical fiction, fortune telling stories and mystery this book is for you. I’ll add that if you like strong female characters that do anything to get their way, you’ll get quite a few of them in this book. It is quite long and has some really dense chapters with a lot of details, so maybe do take that in consideration if you’re wondering wether or not to read it.

I think that’s all I have to say, I know this review is really long as I write it mainly for myself (otherwise I forget everything about the books I read), but I hope it’s understandable nonetheless.
(English isn’t my first language so if they are any mistakes that might be why)

A fairly long book. The main character tells fortunes, but the book is about so much more than that.
