W O W. what a wild ride, I’ve been waiting for a book like this!

The last book in the personalised book subscription I was gifted as a leaving present, and it's a book that whilst I remember seeing a lot of buzz and positive reviews around when it released, I very much doubt I'd have thought to read it without recieving it. Which is a real shame as this was so great and whilst a bit of a taste breaker for me, still felt fundamentally like a fantasy book with its setting, pace and the role of magick in the story. It also feels very Dickens meets Austen, obviously with how it contrasts a story of an orphan in poverty with the tale of middle to upper class social maneuvering, but also more discreetly with some of the prose style too. The story is a so engaging (though I do have to say part three was a little weaker), paced quickly with its unique structure and two deliciously flawed POVs, laden with twists and mysteries throughout! I really loved the protagonist, Red, not despite but because of all her flaws and complications. What an ending too!!
More than anything though, reading this was a bit of a wake up call to try out more historical fiction, so I'm going to set myself another challenge goal for next year around reading more, and will likely check out one of Laura Shepherd-Robinson's books

Having very much enjoyed this authors previous two novels, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one. It captured me from the beginning & I was very firmly side by side with Red as she told her story. The complex plotting & knowledge of 18th century England is wonderful, albeit lengthy! This is not a short book & I did find it a bit of a marathon. However, the final quarter of the story neatly ties everything up (even the bits you didn’t realise needed tidying up!) It’s a beautifully written story, with many, many layers. I really enjoyed it.
Honestly I had a great time with this one. Historical fiction with a dash of fantasy, a lot of mystery and plot twists that might give you whiplash - what’s not to love??
Molto avvincente!
