This was the first book of 2024 that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. While there was much to love at the start, the fates wouldn’t allow us to form a connection.
Things started off promising. Many great characters, Joan the Wad! My favorite! There’s tons to learn about fortune telling and the square of sevens, it’s all terribly fascinating.
But…..the further we go the more beloved characters we lose, some popping in for only a few chapters. The first person narration begins to wear down the plot, as usual with first person, too much telling, no showing. And halfway through I gave up. Chapters seemed more filler than moving things forward and even though I really enjoyed Red, she would have been better served with something other than first person narration.

This book was craaazzzyy!! I almost dnfed it after the first few chapters but I am so glad I didn't. The story was incredibly well told and there are so many little nuggets and pieces weaving their way through that all end up relevant to the story. The characters were very well written and compelling. I love the format of the parts and chapters with the playing cards. There were so many fascinating twists and layers to this book, both at the very end and throughout the story. I almost want to reread it to make sense of it all after reading the ending, plus to catch any foreshadowing and meanings behind the playing cards at the start of the chapters. I also learned a lot about the time period while reading this book, and the historical note at the end really adds to that and gives fascinating context for how the author came up with the story.

Although it's well-written, it just isn't the book for me right now; it's more romantic in feel than Enlightenment.

The end was great, a lot of unexpected twists, but I found it hard to get into/stick with.
