A quote I thoroughly enjoyed from page 497: "'When a man is powerful and evil, other people surround themselves with lies, until they're not sure if they're protecting him or protecting themselves.'"
Without spoiling the end, I found this book to be something of a balm for the current status of the world. Well worth all the build up.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really really enjoyed this! It had such an old-time feel to it. It is very dickensian which is right up my street.
It's quite a lengthy novel, which I didn't realise at the beginning. But after dipping in and out of it I fully committed to it and I'm so glad I did, because I ploughed through the ending not wanting to put it down.
Red is quite a complicated character and narrator. Whenever she gets you on her side she makes a choice that makes you dislike her, but then she gets you onside again. She's very flawed and seems quite selfish but the ending is very satisfying.
I'd definitely recommend this to people who like classic novels from the 18th and 19th century. I'll make sure I look up the authors other books too.

What can I say?! Blimey! It's been a long long time that a book has surprised me this much! What a read! I loudly gasped at the end. Shocker! Such a great book.
Book club - January Book
Not the type of book I'd have picked up, but I'm glad it was suggested. It was an interesting read, and I liked the way the book flowed. Although 500+ pages I didn't think the book was over stretched. I good range of characters, some likeable some not. I loved Mr Antrobus and Mrs Freeman take from the beginning. Lady Seabroke and Lazarus Darke I didn't like. I knew the brothers De Lacy were snakes but I didn't not expect the nephew to be a bad guy I'll be honest. The twists and turns were exciting and I did find myself drawn to this book from the getgo. Loved the ending. And the explanation on how the story is loosely based on real things made it even more exciting for me. Overall a solid 4.75*
