don’t think it lived up to the hype. couldn’t really feel any of the characters and the writing style didn’t keep me lured into the stories.
such an honest, real and innocent yet mature book that discusses major themes like discrimination and domestic abuse and even trivial memories like one's first bike and making friends. the author's decision to tell her tales of esperanza and friends were so refreshing as vignettes and made the book that much easier to read, but the topics discussed and the short stories being told were fun and heartbreaking and bittersweet all at once.
i understand now how this novel became as renowned as it is, even to this day !! i see bits and pieces of myself in esperanza and her experiences and in some of her friends too, even now as an adult. encapsulates a certain threshold between youth and adulthood, which may unfortunately be earlier in some because of their circumstances and upbringings. pleased and elated that i was finally able to read this telling novel :")

this book was a lovely read and i can see why everyone loves it so much. my favorite chapter is “A House of My Own”… it resonates with me on a profound, personal level, i’m going to get a hard copy of it as well so i can always have it with me.
