This is a book I have wanted to read for a long time, based off of all the hype I've heard about it; however, it didn't meet those expectations. It was a good book, don't get me wrong, but it just didn't accomplish what I expected. This is an extremely short book written in a series of vignettes. I loved the originality of this, but some of the vignettes majorly trumped (sorry for lack of a better word) over the other vignettes. There were a decent amount of vignettes that left me empty. Yes, there were some that were very powerful and awe inspiring, but some just left me feeling blank. This is a strong, powerful feminist novel, and I really did enjoy that. Also, just as a side-note, the introduction to this novel is absolutely amazing, fabulous, and all of the other positive adjectives out there. I actually enjoyed the introduction more than some of the vignettes. Just because this novel is so short, I would have to recommend it, but don't go in thinking it's going to be this above-five-star book.

A nice read, and a lovely way to experience a neighborhood, but didn't stand out as anything super special. I can see why it's a Chicago staple, but it's not like the best book of all time.

Tbh, I liked the introduction more than the actual book. That said, I absolutely loved the story and (especially) the writing in the intro, and I can’t wait to pick up another book by her.

🥭🏘️ so so so so good. I am not usually one for a story told in all vignettes but the structure worked so well for Esperanza’s story (and the story of her neighbors). Cisneros writing style is easily digestible yet so thoughtful and impactful. I hope to read more by her soon.
This style of vignette driven book is always harder for me to attach myself to, but it’s beautiful nonetheless.
