Honestly was a great book, I can’t say cute because of somd subjects addressed, but I felt a endearment and care for Esperanza. Listening tkt he author’s explanation of why she chose to tell the story from a child’s pov heavily informed my approach to taking in the story. I do think it was a genius and perfectly fitting idea.
It gave insight into what a neighbirhood like Esperanza’s would be like and the type of people from various backgrounds & stories. Books are a way to travel without leaving your room, and this did just that. The young pov adds an extra layer of humanization to what others were going through, and it’s something about the innocence of the witness that highlights the otherwise overlooked & normalized pain or struggle. An interesting choice was made to keep the young voice even when time & bdays passed, it this just further did the above despite the character continuing to grow, which humanized her as well.
